Creative Critical Reflection

 

Stage 5 final project

 Meaning in the opening

The meaning of the opening can be about the crime scene and the flashback to get the audience interested. The film is about a stalker who kills innocent high school girls and the police trying to solve the case. We're trying to create like a mysterious tone trough out the opening so the audience will know that its a mystery movie.   

Technology used

We mainly use a computer at school while editing, Perhaps during break if we're aloud to finish at home we'll use computers at home. We didn't really use any post production technologies either, currently we haven't found any good sounds nor music for our opening.  We didn't use any tutorials either, we just learn how to use the program was we went on. At least for me, not really sure if I can say the same about my fellow group members. For transitions we used fade to whites to represent photographs being taken by a camera. We're also trying to make sure the transitions fit the tone of the opening, can't have the transition look like something from a comedic sit-com while it transitions from police tape to a dead body. For the flash back it's meant to be black and white so the viewer will know that it's a flashback to what happened.

While working on the editing Shivanie and I have discovered little things that help with editing a bit, such as using the space bar to pause the video and using the arrow keys to move the line across the video. Other than that I think those were tiny bits of what we learned while editing. A difficulty we faced while Sarah was gone was finding the right background music for our film we couldn't find any what was free nor felt right with the tone. Didn't use any other source of media as inspiration, at least not that I know of. I think while editing we made small changes from what was originally intended, such as whos production title we use and making the credits come from the side of the screen like a typewriter. Sadly, I can't provide screenshots nor video since it's on another computer.

Title conventions

Not too sure on what that part means, but when thinking of a title we were trying to think of something suspenseful and mysterious. 

Diary for final project

3-7-22

 When I first tried the program it refused to play the clip that I had imported into the program nor will it let me edit it. I don't know if the problems the program or the video files. Afterwards since Adobe Premiere pro didn't work I tried using Adobe Premiere Rush and it didn't work either. In the end I decided to use Clipchamp since that's the only one that I sort of know how to use and the only program that would work without a watermark. Then Ms. Landis told us to use WeVideo so apparently I used that one instead (this got a little confusing)  

3-8-22

Before class ended yesterday I spoke with Ms. Landis if we didn't have to use WeVideo, she said we didn't have to use WeVideo and could use any editing software that worked. So I was glad I could use Clipchamp, plus I already made some progress on it. While working I sort of feel pressured into making opening the best I can in class, although I would feel more comfortable doing it al home so I can add the sound effects and would feel like I'm not being watched watched while working. I wonder if Ms. Landis would let us work on the opening from home.🤔

As of now, I think I'm almost done and I just need to add the credits and sound effects. Sooooo..... apparently we now need to add a lot on credits in such a small amount of footage, honestly the worst part is that Shavanie didn't e-mail me the recoding for the title where she zooms in on the I See You on the phone. >:/  

Nevermind that, since I managed to find a way around it, anyways its kind of a good thing since it would go over the limit.

3-9-22

Yesterday I tried to finish the opening at home, but it wouldn't work since I don't have the footage on the computer at home. 

I just found out that on Clipchamp you can add a second audio track, well not just found out more like forgot and remembered since I think I wrote typed about it before in another blog post. I've also managed to add the sounds and music/ test the sounds and music without making too much noise.  

I don't exactly remember what we're supposed to add for the credits and I'm sort of afraid to check the list Sarah sent into the group chat she made for the project, because I don't want to get in trouble for being on my phone. I think I'm just going to go for it since that sounds like a weird thing to worry about when said read out loud. The picture turned out to be blurry, very helpful.

Just found out that what we're currently working isn't the final project... The final editing opening we're doing it as a group... I'm just glad we wont be doing the final project by ourselves and I could do what my group wants to do. 

3-14-22

Apologies for not updating recently, my group and I got caught up in editing our final project. Since I'm typing this on my home computer, I don't have access to my version of the opening that I made on Clipchamp. 🙄 So I think our group is doing a swell job with the real final opening, although I do find their technique of editing a tad strange, but it gets the job done. 

3-15-22

So far I think we're almost done with the opening, all we need to do is add the sound, music, and credits. Since today Sarah left early Shavanie and I were a bit lost on what to do. Especially with trying to find the right music for the opening, we didn't really find anything that caught our ey-.. err... ears in this case. Honestly, it was a bit of pressure since we also have to do an essay on our own that's also a mid-term grade. I'm pretty sure it also has to be at least 600 words and I think the only time we're given is tomorrow. I feel like I might not be able to finish with that time limit, but I'll just go with it and see how it goes. 

3-16-22

Didn't work on the opening today, did midterm essay instead. Sadly, I don't think I can show progress of what we have done so far due me typing out my blogs from a different computer than the one we're editing on.

4-1-22

Apologies for not updating the blog lately, it was spring break and I was caught up with editing and other schoolwork. Right now we've found the right music for the opening and we're also done with the final project. We've also finished the credits as well as the sounds and some finishing touches. Now I just need to get done with the CCR plan, which as to be written in an essay format with 6 paragraphs. I think I took it the wrong way with the double spacing and the font, But hopefully I can finish it by tonight. (I think there may be a word limit as well, but I don't remember)

Step 4 of final project

 Production

Difficulties/bloopers?

Some difficulties we had along the way were stuff like the weather, especially when we were trying to record a piece of police tape with fake blood on it wouldn't stay still for the shot because of the wind. I remember that I joked around that the police tape was camera shy. Another was when we were making the shots for the crime scene after I put fake blood on Sarah, we were getting looks from people passing by and even one person freaked out a bit thinking that the blood on Sarah was real. 

Changes and revisions

I honestly don't really remember too much of the changes, but I do remember that we were going to to record the crime scene in the parking lot. We recorded on like a... I want to say like a stone slab or step that was by a mystery door outside that was by like a mini parking space. The best part of the spot was that it wasn't too public, I feel like if we did it by the parking lot in front of the school to me it would have felt more pressured to watch for people driving by the keeping the ground clean. Don't even get me started on the story through out the project, at first it had something to do with an online friend group murder mystery, now its a murder mystery about a stalker killing high school girls. 

What I learned

I learned that Clipchamp is a jerk when it comes to editing on a different computer. Seriously, when I tried to edit a little bit of my opening from home it wouldn't let me edit anything due to not having the footage on the computer from home. 

While working with my group on the final project I've learn how to use WeVideo, since I didn't really know how to use it before working with my group.

Step 4 of final project

Recording shots

So far my group barley got any shots besides the ones for the crime scene, so recording has been a bust. This is because the member who plays the girl had a terrible charger cable and her phone didn't charge last night, the shots we needed needed to have her phone on while I, the stalker sent her a text. Another reason we couldn't record was because the person who was supposed to record had something come up. Although we're planning to finish the shots this weekend if our parents let us meet up to record our shots. Might be a little hard to convince my mother to let me meet up with friends to record at night, in an empty parking lot, while wearing a black hoodie. At night. During the weekend. At night. Yeah.... I would be concern if my kid asked me that as well. Anyways, on with the blog. 

Technology we used

To record our shots we used the highest form on technology to film. The most technologically advanced camera we could get ahold of.. Shivanie's phone. We just had Shivanie use her phone to film the shots and she was the camerawoman, because during the early stages of the project the three of us summited an example of our recordings, to choose who would be the one recording and Shivanie's was the smoothest. Honestly, mines was really shaky and jittery, I think in my footage you can even hear a crack from my leg if you listen close enough. :') 

What I learned

Besides learning that prop police tape are camera shy, we didn't really use and equipment such as lights and cameras (plural), we recorded outside and the lighting was sunlight. I'm meant to talk about what I learned from production technologies, but since we didn't really use much this part of the blog would be too short. :/  Anyways, fake blood can stain skin a bit, but there's nothing that a little soap, water, and a towel to scrub off with can't help. Since the fake blood was also in a spray bottle it was kind of hard to make fake stab wounds with it and I learned that I wasn't the best at making fake stab wounds with a spray, at least I didn't get any on Sarah's shoes. We also had to have a little on the pavement to make it look a little realistic, but I also tried to be careful with how I did it, because I didn't want us getting in trouble for getting the pavement messy. We managed to get a little off, but some stained it a bit and it wasn't too bad, because we can use play it off as one of those mystery stains that appear randomly on the floor. The chalk was simple just Shivanie tracing Sarah's body to make it look like a crime scene, its a good thing that chalk comes of with water and a little bit of scrubbing. The police tape in this shot wasn't shy this time, but it did keep flipping over in the wind.

How I learned how to use the equipment

Again, we didn't really use any equipment, we just used a phone and Shivanie was the one recording. We just learned how to use the equipment as we went. I don't think any of the shots we based off any other shots from films or shows, if one was I feel like my group would have informed me about it or I would have remembered it.

Step 3 of final project

Film location

 

if the fake blood ends up staining the ground were going to be in so much trouble. 

The film locations we have decided to film the opening at Coconut Creek High School's parking lot.

The reason why we choose this location is because I think that this is the only location we can use that doesn't require asking our parent's permission to take us to a parking lot at night, honestly I would be concern too if my kid ask me to drive them to a random parking at night with their friends. 

Then again we have to use fake blood and depending on how we use the fake blood we might have to get some of the ground. We might end up having to clean up the fake blood with soap and water :,)

Who will be in our opening?

The actors in our seen will be us. I don't think I know the full reason, but I know that part of the reason is so we don't have to go through the awkwardness of asking people to be in our opening. Besides it's much easier to have the actor be one of us so we could sort of get it the way we want to? I don't exactly know how to describe it. Also there are only to be like two characters on screen anyways besides the feet of the officers, we already had an idea on who will play the girl that gets murdered since we were working on stage 1. I think at some point my group decided that I would play the stalker? I'm not 100% if they were serious or were just spit-balling ideas.

What will our film be like?

Sadly I couldn't really find any good examples for what the opening will be like, so I'm going to say that the opening scene is going to a be a little bit like Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel. Since that was technically the only film with it's opening as a crime scene that I could find, but the film should feel more mysterious and suspenseful, making the audience at the edge of their seats for more.  

Sounds of the opening

We were just going to use sound effects we found online, I think some sounds such as walking/footsteps are going to be in-camera.

Storyboard

Unfortunately since at this time my group and I have been focusing out class time on the shot by shot I don't have any screenshots of storyboards shots. (sorry) 

So far we decided to split the work between us with the storyboard shots, for example one person will do shots 1-4 and another will do shots 5-9 etc. For my shots I want them to look simply and to be more like a sketch when I draw. 

Shooting schedule

So... we might have to postpone some of the shooting to the week of the 21st due to the member who plays the most important character of the opening not being here until that week. Come to think of it, we can't start shooting the shots without them since the character they're playing is literally in every shot.

 We might have to shot the shoots that we meant to be at night early in the mourning, like it's still dark early in the mourning. The only problem with this is that I can't be there early, since my bus normally gets to school after the bell rings or like 2 minutes before the bell rings. The daytime shots should be easy since all we have to do is ask Ms. Landis is we can go outside to shoot.  

What tech we need

Maybe something for lighting and fake blood. I know it's not tech but we need it and will get it. We'll be using our phones to record and edit in class hopefully. I'm also hoping we might not need to ask the officers on campus to turn their lights on for our shots. 

Stage 2 Final Project

 Final Script

At the beginning of script writing we worked on it together in class while spit-balling ideas with each other. We wanted to get the ideas clear before we were able to write the final script for out film opening. Before the weekend while a member of our group was absent, another member and I wanted to try texts in some editing programs to see which will work best before we start filming. While searching for texts we also can up with some ideas to add on to the script later during the weekend. My group had decided that I would be the one to finish the script, since on was busy somewhere else and another had to be careful with her screen time on devices. 

At first I didn't really know what to put because I could remember some of the details of the ideas and I didn't want to mess up the script with whatever I can up with, so I wanted to hear every single detail of another member's ideas so I can type it in the script. When she explained it, again I couldn't remember some of the details and ended up using what she told me and adding a bit of what I can come up with into the script. After she explained it I went back to ask some questions about the script, but didn't want to ask too much to the point where I could end up bothering her. Of course, eventually I got the script done and I hope that it wouldn't make things difficult filming it.

Case Study 

At first I was stumped on what film to choose for my case study due to the large variety of crime/mystery, but with a little assistance I've came to using M (1931) 

This film is about German police officers trying to catch a child abductor while the people of town including criminals try to take the case on their own. 

M (1931) history: supposedly M was based of an actually case of a serial killer named Peter Kürten he was also known as the Düsseldorf Vampire. He would also commit serial murder, sexual violence, and sadism. M was also Fritz Lang, the director's first film with sound. The movie was also known for it's outstanding use of lighting techniques and offscreen sound to really bring out the sense of horror

It's target audience can be older people who enjoy mystery films based of real cases. It's also for people who want to watch a classic film and who want to look back on what was considered high quality film techniques at the time. 

 

Their production company was Nero-Film AG, an independent German production company at the time who also help produce film films such as The Phantom of the Circus and Pandora's Box. 

M also has many distribution companies including HBO Max, and Paramount Pictures for the English dubbed versions.

With how was the movie promoted it of course had a trailer, but in 1934 the film was banned by the Nazis and the ban was eventually revoked. Right now the movie can be viewed on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, VUDU, and I think It can also be viewed on YouTube as well.

distribution and modes of exhibition

Upon research it was difficult and couldn't really find information on distribution companies that specifically work with mystery movies.

I was thinking for the distribution company it should be Lionsgate, they distributed crime and mystery movies that have done amazing in the past. Examples can be American Psycho, Under Suspicion, Irreversible, and the whole Saw franchise.

For streaming we could also use Netflix, since almost everyone uses and owns a Netflix account. Netflix even recommends people who watch a movie another one with a similar plot that they think will like.

We can exhibit the film using DVDs, movie theaters, streaming services, and screenings.

Production companies

I think one company that would seem right for our film would be Endgame Entertainment since upon looking at some of the films they helped produced, most of them are crime and mystery films. Including movies such as Side Effects, Snowden, and Self/less. 

Perhaps maybe we'll prefer to produce with a large company. when working with a larger company we could have be given a big budget so the film can look better and give their employees bigger salaries.  

 

Picking an appropriate production company is important. For example if we have Happy Madison Productions be our producer people might associate our film with Adam Sandler due to them producing every movie he is in, such as Grown ups, Jack and Jill and The Click. No hate towards Adam Sandler but the movies he's in are mostly comedy and the type of films Happy Madison Productions creates doesn't fit out theme.

I'm sure we could try to convince them that our film is worth it we could explain the main focus on how the film is about officers trying to find a killer, but it turns out the killer is actually one of them. Then we could talk about how the movie will end and leave them on a cliffhanger, therefore making them question what happens next. We could make be everyone's money in ticket sales and try to include scenes that will get the audience to talk about the movie online, which will make others who haven't seen it interested in watching. We could sell the movie by having it played in theaters, available in streaming services and make money off the advertisements that play while viewers are watching on the streaming site.

What does the script look like

Stage 2 of final project

The script for the opening scene they either start at the crime scene or start during the crime. An example of this can be the script for Blood Work where they start the script with the detectives already investigating the crime. The reason why I have chosen Blood work as an example is because it's also a crime/mystery movie. My group has been thinking of making out film also start at the crime scene.

Similar films

 Stage 2 of Final Project

Since the plot of the film has changed after I typed my first project process blog, its sort of harder to find films with a similar plot to ours with the killer working with the police to throw them of the killer trail. Since the killer first stalks then kills their victims after texting them "I see you" its pretty specific on finding the right one as well. 

So far the only movie I could think of that has a similar plot is Death Note (2006), mainly the part where the killer is part of the police. It's even a mystery/crime. The budget for this specific film was estimated to be around $20,000,000, according to IMBD. Of course the budget of our film wont nearly me around that amount. I even remember when brainstorming the idea for out film a member of our group complained how the idea kept getting compared to Death Note when they haven't seen it.

It's target audience are adults and teens who loved reading the manga and for new comers who love a mystery film that isn't afraid to go dark. Our target audience are people who are into mystery and would enjoy a good twist that the killer was part of the police that were searching for them.

From what I could find they never specified on how the movie was financed, but what I could find was how films get financed. Movies can get financed by either the studio that agreed to help with the film or the film's producers working on a budget and secure financing for the film, when it's an independent film. When the film is an indie film the filmmakers use their tax credits, grants, and personal networks to fund the film.

Stage 1 of Final Project

*After the creation of this blog post the idea for the film was changed to a story about a stalker who kills people after texting them "I see you"

When it comes to what type of movie we were going for is group has chosen mystery, and the plot is about a person who was found murdered after taking part of a tense argument online.  The plot is about a girl who vents about her problems at school to her online friends of whom she doesn't know personally, but still see them as her friends. Suddenly the girl is murdered by one of the online friends after a heated argument, but no one in the group knows who killed her. It's similar to Unfriended, but with a hint of mystery in it.  I think it might be part psychological thriller since it kind of focuses on bullying, cyberbullying, and it contains a person getting doxed online (something that many people fear about having it happen to them).

The theme of the movie could be be careful of who you trust online? or be careful of what you share online? Honestly I'm not really sure about the theme yet, but the style it could be like in some scenes we could screen-record the conversation between the group in some scenes and some scenes it could be real life. The characters? Maybe we could try to make the friend group have very diverse personalities. Since their faces and names wont be shown we might have to try to make their online profiles and avatars coordinate to their personality, so when the viewer sees them they could see what they might be like based off of their profile.  Mainly got inspired by Unfriended with the profile thing.

 

After watching the film openings of Get Out and Antebellum, both are psychological thriller and mystery. Both film openings seem to tell a bit of the plot without giving away too much. In Get Out the opening mainly show the couple's mourning routine, even cutting to show how both separately. 

Even while  watching the opening scene for Unfriended (or at least the scene that first plays in the film) it mostly shows the main characters or some characters doing what they would normally do.

 In the first shot of the intro for Get Out it shows someone stuffing what seems to be another person into the back of their car before driving off.  Then it cuts to the title card with a forest in the background, but its made to look like you're passing by a forest in a moving vehicle. 

Later, it shows black and white photographs of different things on the wall and people, such as white pit-bull and a pregnant woman's bump. It then cuts multiple time to show the main character's home, judging by the decoration and the place's appearance we can assume that the main character is a photographer. 

 Later on it shows the male character doing his mourning routine and the female character getting breakfast for them, it continues to cut back and forth to them doing this until the female character returns home with the breakfast and kissing male partner. Based off this information it seems that the two are in a relationship together. 

There isn't really a setting since we were planning for the film to mainly show like a group chat between a group of people online. If a scene requires to see a person I was thinking it could show it from a view of a camera like in Unfriended: Dark Web.

The intended audience for the film I feel would be teenagers, the plot of the film seems like something teens maybe interested in. Yet, the mystery part may draw in older audiences, I may say that the intended audience would be teens and adults who are into mystery.  

They would normally the font looks clean and kind of plan, my guess it's to make it seem serious. Most of the time the font wont take too much space in the poster and in most posters such as The Woman In The Window they mainly show a person's face looking at the camera or from a 3/4 angle. 

The stereotypes in mystery films kind of bother me in a way, like the detective's partner whos there for comedic breaks so the audience can take a break from the seriousness of the plot. There's also the detective who extremely serious about their job and the pretty lady who's mainly there for, I want to say fan service, but I feel like that's not the right word, so I'll just say that for now.

Editing programs

 Clipchamp

The editing website that I've decide to use is called Clipchamp. I mainly chose this website due to my classmates talking about using it, so I've decided why not check it out as well. To use the program you have to make an account first and that's what I did, but I just signed in with my side Gmail to use it. You can collaborate with others, lay music on top of each other, its accessible from anywhere, I'm not sure if you can mute or strip audio from the video because I haven't tried it yet.  

Openshot

Openshot requires you to download the program, so it isn't web-based. The site that has the information about the program claims to be able to lay multiple tracks including audio tracks and backgrounds. The site doesn't say anything about being able to collaborate with others. The site also doesn't say anything about muting nor stripping the audio from videos, I'm going to assume that you can mute audio you add in yourself in the actual program.

Wevideo

It is web-based and you and download it if you want to, to use it web-based you just need to make an account just like Clipchamp. Its also accessible anywhere, you can even use it on your tablet, phone, and computer. You can lay tracks on top of each other, it starts off by giving you 3 tracks, but you can add more if you want to. You can't collaborate with others. Judging by how the program is set up I don't think you mute sounds from videos you add in, but you can strip and mute audio that you adding in yourself in the editing program as well.

Film Openings

 What are film openings?

Film openings are like the first impression of the film, during that time the film will do it's best to grab your attention and make you want to watch how the story will progress. The opening will give a little context on what the film will be about or will give details on something important.

Every detail is important

Every detail of the film is important from the props, to the camera movement and angel, and to the lighting. Even the music can add to the opening, like how in La La Land you can tell that the movie is a musical by everyone dancing and singing happily. Even if you don't know the film's genre the opening can give you clues to what the film's genre is. Like how if a movie is a drama with a hint of mystery it could have dark lighting and low music.

For the portfolio I'm kind of thinking of making like a horror, comedy, or drama. For horror openings they mainly either show a flash-forward, a flash-back to the first kill or sometimes a dream that might predict the events or killings. Comedy can start with a plot catalyst with something that can introduce the story in a comedic way or maybe a silly dream sequence that could also predict something. Dramas can start with something that establishes relationships from the perspective of the characters or also a plot catalyst.

Film Opening Analysis

*Since we're not supposed to do animated films for this I have to add in films that weren't on my favorite films list because almost all of my favorite films on that list were animated :')

Escape Room

Escape Room is a horror/ sci-fi film due to the elaborate puzzles they must solve to escape each room to move on to the next and the lives that were taken while trying to solve the puzzles. Just like the Saw movies I think the purpose of the puzzles and the people chosen to participate was to make them appreciate their lives more as more of the participants die after finishing each stressful puzzle or to serve as entertainment for like the game master.

(Warning it does have swear words in it)

The opening scene for this film is a flash-forward gives an example of what to expect for the puzzles through out the film. The puzzles are difficult and are life or death. I find this scene interesting due to the amazing acting and how this scene gives me anxiety no matter how many times I re-watched it. Again I also found the killing game concept in media to be an interesting idea. 

Holes

Holes is an adventure and drama film that follows the adventures of Stanley Yelnats as he goes to a camp for a crime he didn't commit. Now the film by Disney is an adaption of the book Holes, which I find to be a good read. If you ask me the book is better than the film because the film leaves out some details such as Stanley's life at school and I don't think the film goes in about the Yelnats's curse. The camp is where they make the troubled boys dig holes in a dried up lake in the middle of an desert that I think have to be exactly 5 x 5 to look for an old treasure. 

The opening scene is actually a flashback of a character who gets bitten by a rattlesnake on purpose to try to get out of digging holes. It then uses a match cut as it goes from the camp to Stanley as he narrates how he got to camp and what causes him to go there, but I feel that the book does a better job at describing it I understand that they might have had to cut some details out due to time and it might have made the film boring.

Beauty and The Beast (2017) 

I remember watching thing I think either once or twice before. Its just like the classic animated Beauty and the Beast but it does have it's changes such as being darker than the animated one and it tells about Belle's mother. I also found the detail of the beast's castle falling apart as the rose petals fall to be an incredible detail in the film. 

An obvious detail is that the beast's curse isn't told by stained glass windows like in the original and it also has a new character, the pianist. This opening is a flashback to how beast got himself and his staff cursed. The enchanted red rose of course adds on to the fact that the beast has to find true love to break the curse. 

Compare and contrast🔍

Each films are different in each way. Escape Room is a horror film that makes it's characters go through puzzles as they remember traumatic experiences from their past, like how one of the characters takes survival of the fittest seriously due to them previously surviving a plane crash in the middle of the ocean and them having to kill their friend to live. Holes and Beauty and the Beast are both drama films of the main character being in a different place where they want to leave. What Escape Room and Holes have in common is that they give some backstory to characters seen in the film. Beauty and the Beast's music gives it more of a magical vibe and matches with the year the story is meant to take place. Escape Room has little to no music unless there is an intense scene where a character's life is in danger to add suspense. Holes adds music to add to the scene like when the warden was first on screen it played like a pop song to represent how she's meant to be foxy. The editing in both Escape Room and Beauty in the Beast is amazing in my opinion like how in the opening scene in Beauty and the Beast they did a close up shot of the prince's eyes as he transforms in to the beast. Even in escape room with making it look like one of the rooms are heating up and fire blasting out of the vent the characters used to escape from that room to scorch them if they got out too late.

Mis-en-scène is everything inside a shot. From lighting, to costumes, to props, to even the actors. 

Mis-en-scène is meant to create mood in a shot and everything in the shot has it's purpose. Even if an item doesn't do anything in the scene it still has it's purpose, to create the mood in the scene. 

The way mis-en-scène works is by different elements working together in the scene to create the mood and to tell what's going on. It also lets the viewer experience a specific time and place. 

Mise-en-scène is extremely important to films, it adds to the plot and grabs the viewer's attention.

Movie Genre / Types of Movies

 Movie genre is how the movie can be classified based on it's contents. These classifications can be horror, drama, musical, sci-fi, comedy, or even a combination between two or more. 

🎭Drama🎭

Drama is a type of genre that contains stories with high stakes and normally has lots of conflict. Dramatic themes are meant to be similar to real life situations, so they could seem realistic. Drama is centered around the characters, relationships, atmosphere, and tension. Drama is meant to tell a meaningful story that can move the viewer, like making them shed tears has they watch a character they relate to have their happily ever after.

😱Horror😱

Horror includes stuff like violence, blood and gore, it's also meant to portray the viewer's worst nightmare. Horror movies are also meant to make the viewer uncomfortable, like adding scenes where they take close up shots of gore. Some techniques horror movies use are jumpscares, spotlights, mirror reflections (like those medicine cabinet jumpscares) underexposure, and tight framing. Some themes horror movies can have can be "be careful what you wish for" and "don't take something for granted". Horror movies can also leave the viewer cautious of their surroundings. 

💖Rom-com💖

Rom-coms or romantic comedies are love stories that are told in a comedic way. Romantic comedies are also meant to be heartfelt stories about finding the one, while also putting in silly scenes as well. You can also tell if a movie is a romantic comedy by the poster, an example of this can be a guy and a girl with their backs towards each other. 

🎵Musical🎵

Musicals are a type of genre that includes songs in the story or even tells part of a story through song and dance. Right now musicals are like 90% music and they mainly tell the story though songs. The biggest examples of musicals are High School Musical and West Side Story, which mainly started the trend of musicals.

💥Action💥

Action films include scenes that have stunts, explosions, fight scenes and car chases. In these types of films there's almost always a good guy and a bad guy that the good guy has to stop. This includes superhero movies and Rambo.
